We
welcome your visit.
The Guest House, Cottage 1 on the site plan, is a renovation project
demonstrating many of the strategies we hope to incorporate in the structures
to be built on Parchcorn Hollow.
The main floor of The Guest House has been modified using various concepts
pulled from "The Not So Big House" by Sarah Susanka. Another focus
of the renovation has been our attempt to improve light, air flow, and views
through the structure. We also wanted to maximize the heating and cooling
benefits of the home's existing ideal passive solar orientation.
We are trying to create a net Zero Energy House. Upgrading windows,
increasing insulation, switching from incandescent to compact fluorescent
lighting, installing a solar hot water system and grid-tied photovoltaic
(solar electric) panels are all steps we have taken in an effort to bring the
home's utility bills to $0.
Wherever possible, we have incorporated inexpensive, readily available and
reused construction materials. We have tried to make a common house type, the
ranch, interesting to be in and more practical for how people live today at a
cost that would not price it out of the market.
The Guest House functions as an informal Bed & Breakfast with revenues
funding the repair/renovation of the barn.
Come see us.
